How To Make Your LinkedIn Bio More Interesting

So you start reading someone's bio on LinkedIn… "Hi, my name is x, and I work at xx doing xxx."

And you stop reading. Why? Because it's BORING! That's right, your bio may be boring potential connections and clients to tears before they even get a chance to realize how awesome you are.

Throw out everything you know about writing bios on LinkedIn. Most websites and help guides will give you the same old cookie-cutter bio that EVERYONE uses, and people can tell when you just copy, paste, and fill in your information when needed.

Instead, do something different. Make your bio into a short narrative starring you, what you do, and who you are.

For example:

"My name is Sam, and I work in computer software for This Generic Computer Company…"
See what's happening there, that little ellipse? That's people clicking off Sam's LinkedIn because her bio was unoriginal. All it did was make blanket statements of what Sam does and who she works for.

But she's so much more than that, and so are you. You'd never be able to tell from that bio the different kinds of skills that Sam has or get a feel of her voice and personality at all.

Look at the difference here:

"@SamHasAUsername, thisisamsemail@samsemail.com
I'm Sam, a computer software specialist for This Generic Computer Company. I've been with the company for 15 years and am currently working towards my doctorate in computer programing. You can typically find me on the weekends biking or watching reruns of Star Trek. Need computer help? Feel free to reach out!"

See what Sam did there? You still have all the information she gave you in the sentence prior, but now she seems like an actual person and not some computerized robot taking over your social media.

She also included her social media tag and her email at the very top of my bio to make it easy for people to contact her.

It's not about writing something elaborate, but being able to show as much of your personality you can in as little space as possible.

From Sam's bio above, you can see everything she does for This Generic Computer company, her aspirations, hobbies, and her love for Star Trek. Adding little details are what make people inclined to work with you, and not your competitor

Sam even snuck in a call-to-action where she invited the reader to ask her questions about computers! And she did that all in three sentences. I know that you can, too.

It's easy to get stuck on the "what" it is you do, but people are more interested in "how" and "why" you do it.

Be yourself. Show your personality, and if you need help writing anything from bios to blogs, let us know!
